No More Gym? Don't Worry, Your Muscles Remember : NPR

You know that friend who used to be a jock and now seems kind of lazy — but annoyingly, all he has to do is exercise for a month to get ready for a triathlon?

Well, new research says there's a reason for that.

Muscles actually have a memory of their former strength — and that memory may last indefinitely, University of Oslo physiologist Kristian Gundersen tells NPR's Audie Cornish. Gundersen's team just released a study that has good news for those of us who used to be fit.

This is good news for me. I did Nautilus three times a week in my 20s, and it was the healthiest I've ever been. Job and life changes caused me to drop that from my life. It's nice to know there may still be a six-pack under there somewhere.

Well that explains a lot. I go to the gym every day and have a hell of a time seeing results. However my cousin who spent about 2yrs drunk only had to work out for a few months before losing all the weight. I'm jealous now.

I believe there is something to be said for a slowing metabolism due to age and diet. Borders Books Online has a free copy of Jillian Michaels' book Master Your Metabolism (electronic version) that has some good tips on things to avoid and times of day to eat. One thing I learned, for example, is that one cup of green tea a day is good, but after one it tends to mimic estrogen making it more difficult to develop muscle mass.

Because of my wife's illness, I've had to be fairly sedentary over the past two years. But I did finally break down and order P90X from beachbody.com which works with "muscle confusion". (Actually, I also ordered P90, the lighter version, to work my way up to the more strenuous version.) I figure I did so well on 1.5 hours a week of Nautilus that I should get back in shape fairly soon. But that was 30 years ago so I'd be kidding myself if I thought it would be just as easy.

It's true I exercise often but of late I've been lazy, when I do return it will take no time to get back where I left off at. Lots of Cardio helps because most weight is water and I sweat like there is no tomorrow which makes weight drop off faster also.

I'm "lucky" to live in a semi-desert climate, so my body does well with sweating. If I'm working hard on gardening I can drink water all day without a bathroom trip. I need to make a jump to some form of cardio for weight loss. I'm not at my heaviest weight but I'm close, and could probably stand to lose 50-80 pounds. If I'm successful I'll post pictures and a story here.

I do the elliptical machine (cardio program) at the health club and have lost about 40lbs over 2yrs.I'll admit I'm not as dedicated as I should be but at age 51 (I'll be 52 in weeks)that doesn't really bother me as it may have if I was younger. I also walk a lot that is the best exercise in the world. May I suggest you get an i-pod, download your favorite tunes, a water bottle and good comfortable pair of sneakers and be on your way.I try not to be a stickler or hard on myself because I didn't walk a certain number of miles. Five steps are better than no steps.

I decided to give up on the health club route this time. I went to one to sign up and went to the introductory class. There was me and a hot chick about half my age. The trainer looked at me and told me to use the walking machines for a couple weeks and then come back for an intro on other machines. Then he spent 25 minutes with the hot chick working out a plan. Doing things at home is easier as it keeps me close to my spouse when needed.

Yes. I understand completely. The trainer, that is.

If that works for you then I wish you the best of luck. I have to remind myself that Rome wasn't built in a day and not to expect miracles overnight.

I hear that, bfam. I just count on being able to channel by OCD tendencies into something positive and productive.

"Growing old is not for sissies." I saw this years ago. Still an inspiration.

Too tall. I think it was on Letterman that Nicole Kidman was asked how she was doing after the divorce. "Well, I can wear heels now."

Hetep and Respect spudpundit and folks, Hay, Hay, I step away for a microsecond and you folks are making fun of your elders (not old people), lol.

      Still an inspiration.

I am glad that you are inspired by your elders. This elder sure is fit, but I am not sure how healthy he is with kidney stones. Fitness and good health are not necessary the same thing.

This elder and I are in the same age group but I have no kidney stones, or any other bodily system brake downs. Hit the link and tell me what you think?

This is a new over 60 health channel I am starting on YouTube. The purpose of the channel is to inspire elders to be fit and healthy, But young folks can come too, lol. Give me a vote, leave a comment and help me get the party started.

Is that you? Good work. With the hat on I would have guessed a 30-year-old. Thanks for sharing. You should post a little narrative in articles with a link when new ones come out.

I don't think the guy in the poster is the same one who wrote the article. I first saw that poster about 10-15 years ago. I just did an image search on Google to find it.

You are probably right. Jack Lalanne was an inspiration to me. I remember at 80, he was still doing 800 push ups a day. You see, just thinking about Jack, U caused me to get down in front of this computer and finish my 50 push uPs for the day, tnx, lol.
