Mental Stimulation Postpones, Then Speeds Dementia : NPR

When it comes to staving off dementia, new evidence suggests that the "use it or lose it" dictum holds true — at least for a while. But it also appears that mentally stimulating lifestyles may speed up dementia once it hits in old age.

"We do think that a cognitively active lifestyle is protective up to some point," says Robert Wilson, a professor of neurological sciences at Rush University Medical Center in Chicago.

But the protection doesn't hold up indefinitely.

Seems way too unfair that you can keep your brain active and prevent mental decline through part of the aging process. But then once that rock goes over the cliff its weight creates an even bigger avalanche.

As a nurse, I can say that once the rock is over the cliff, you really do want a faster fall. There was also a comment by someone that stated saying alzhiemer patients are a burden at end of life was insensitive. That may be but it's also insensitive to deny a caregiver's reality. It just boils down to everyone doing the best they can with what they have. Simplistic? yep.

I imagine so. A slow decline is sad to watch. My aunt is in a residence facility right now, and you never know what's gone "missing" on the next visit.

Thanks for that. I'm a caregiver at home. It can be hard at times, and lonely. One gets tons of advice but not much real help. You learn to live with it but it's not an easy life path.

Hey Spud, been there, done that, still recovering. And it is thankless no matter how many times someone says it ain't so. We all tend to whitewash anything unpleasant but that doesn't change the hard truth. I'm not a cynic but I don't eat much sugar either. ; I'd rather deal with the reality of any situation than fuss with illusions.

Keep it up, whatever that is for you.
